Weaver Exit Signals New Era

I've got mixed feelings about Nicky Weaver leaving City.

Although he's not yet 30, he seems to have been at the club for an age and somewhat of a permanent fixture during a decade of constant change.

To be fair though, Weaver was lucky to play as many games as he did last season and had it not been for an unfortunate injury to Isaksson, he would have had another frustrating season on the bench. Although during the season he showed what a good shot stopper he is, his command of the area, particularly with crosses still left a lot of cause for concern.

With Weaver, young Kaspar and emerging talent Joe Hart all now fighting for that No 2 spot, something had to give and unfortunately for Nicky, it was him.

Whether Sven wanted to quickly cut all linkages with the City of old as a bold statement of intent is unknown, but nevertheless Weaver's exit heralds a new era for City and is just the start of wholesale changes to the club and playing staff, something that is long overdue.

I'd like to wish Nicky all the best and thank him for all the memories, especially the infamous penalty shoot-out at Wembley.

I think we also need to pay tribute to his resilience and fighting spirit having come back from a series of injuries and setbacks which would have seen many other players throw in the towel and give up on their football careers.

Good luck at the Valley Nicky - you deserved a testimonial at the least.

Best thing for him - Schmeichel and Hart would have probably overtaken him in the pecking order and there's no way he'd want to be 4th choice - all the best Nick !

Very sorry, but it may be for the best. I think though that he should have been offered a testimonial. He offered City a very rare commodity in football these days - loyalty. In the modern game perhaps Dunny has it too. Discarding players in this way perhaps explains why players are not so loyal anymore. Oh for the days of the Alan Oakes's.

You're quite right, loyalty is a rarity these days although City did stand by Nick throughout those long years of treatment and rehab and I suspect not many other clubs would have been quite so generous

A true professional the likes of which we will not probably see again.

Mmmmm!

Well I love the lad for Wemberley and all of that but really, a Testimonial?

Surely he's has one already?

Like many years of salary when he wasn't fit to play and top class medical rehab?

It's not as though he is a goalkeeper. He is a shot stopper and a very good one but my 83 year old Auntie Flo could command an area better, collect the occasional high ball and kick far, far better!!

There has been a bit of comment about the club not showing him loyalty, but what about the loyalty shown when he was threatened with career ending injuries for the best part of three seasons.

I think it is the manner of him leaving with a contract offer being taken off the table, but it is just an unfortunate set of circumstances and timing with Pearce being sacked before it was all done and dusted.

All in all, I think it is a move that benefits all parties involved.

weaver and dickov represent THAT play-off final win which if we'd lost we would never have recovered as a club.
sad to see him go and we should raise the roof for him when he's next at the BlueCamp.
