In Defence Of Corradi ...Somebody Has to !

Poor old Bernardo has copped loads of flak in the media all season, but especially in the last few days. He seems to have taken over from Joey as public enemy number one, but as nobody else has stuck up for him, I thought I'd take on the challenge.

Corradi himself has also gone public with criticism of his manager, Stuart Pearce and clearly is not enjoying life at Eastlands.

There is normally a swift parting of the ways when a player publicly slags his manager off, so it is certain that Corradi's time in the blue of City will not last much longer.

City's lack of fire power this season has been a frequent source of ridicule from the rest of the football world and rightly so. It's embarrassing that with an array of international strikers in our squad, we have so far only managed a pathetic 22 league goals in 29 matches.

But, is it fair that Corradi seems to be taking the bulk of the blame for City's desperate form in front of goal; I think Bernardo is getting a rough deal here, as the situation is not that black and white.

True, Corradi has been disappointing in terms of goal scored, but whenever I've seen him play, he's always given 100% which is more than Samaras, for example. Corradi's failure has been more to do with lack of technique and application rather than just coasting around or hiding on the pitch like some sort of Greek tragedy (geddit ?).

Furthermore, any striker is only as good as the quality of supply he gets from the midfield. This has been a real problem for City in the last few seasons and with a complete lack of decent wingers to fire in crosses to the strikers, it's no wonder that Corradi ( & Samaras for that matter) have looked completely inept in front of goal. For Christ's sake, we have the tallest strike partnership in the Premiership and we can't cross a decent ball into them !!

Corradi may have stood a better chance is he'd have been picked in his proper postion as a central striker ( not drifting out to the right and left hunting for the ball) and if Pearce had picked a team and formation that played to his obvious physical strengths; ditto for Samaras, but I'm less forgiving in his case because unlike Corradi, Samaras just hasn't looked interested all season.

So, we're now left with an almost certain parting of the ways as Corradi looks to head home to Italy and who can blame him. This also means City and more specifically Pearce will kiss goodbye to another £2 million with the £6m spend of Samaras looking like it will also disappear into the sunset without any proper return unless something dramatically changes.

It makes me really nervous when I read that Pearce is looking for investment. Sure, more money would be great, but City haven't bought a really decent outfield player that has worked out since the days of Rosler, Kinkladze or Bernarbia. There are probably others that I can't recall off the top of my head, but the point is, it was a long time ago and my confidence in the current management making shrewd transfer investments is not high.

So, it will soon be arrivederci Bernardo ! In the end you tried hard but just weren't good enough, but I think you were also also a victim of the current management culture within the club and that wasn't entirely your fault.

totally agree mate, the service from midfield is atrocious even thierry henry would struggle to score with that kind of service.city haven't had a decent midfield since berkovic & benarbia left, the fans can see it so why can the inept management team not see it???

Thanks.... I forgot Berkovic.

You said it buddy, "inept management"

...why does everyone seem to remember this Kinkladze bloke as some kind of great player for us? I remember him helping us to 2 (or more?) relegations, and disrupting whatever team shape/spirit we had. Sure, he showed flashes of brilliance in dribbling and bating players, but all too often his "pass" (if one ever came) was wayward.

I think it's probably true that he was too good for the rest of the team - as was Anelka. But I can't understand why Kinkladze is still revered...to me he was a false idol...

Flame proof cloak now on...

Think you are wrong in everything you've said about Corradi - excapt: He's not getting the feeds from midfield. Well nowadays that means the wing-backs aren't doing their job - and I agree with that - ever since Sinclair got injured, we've had nobody to take the ball to the line and put it across on either flank.

When Corradi gets the ball - headless chickens spring to mind. He slips, puts it over the stand, and his heading ability would indicate that he isn't able to do the business with that Italian TV star girlfriend of his. Get up - Get down!

Blue of Wigan... perhaps it's the distraction of the lovely Elena Santarelli that's the root cause of all his troubles; I hadn't thought of that.

I guess you can only score so many times before it dries up for a while ;-)

wigan blue- is heading ability is quite clearly the best part of the game...for so often the ball is nocked up to him...he always wins it...but either vassell the coward or the lazy greek are there...im pretty sure thats why other prem clubs are interested in corradi, because with service and playing up front, he will do more...i never did expect him to be running at defenders...

blame pearce for the lack of goals...its his fault

Anonymous = Wind up?

Kinkladze the best player ever to play for our worst team ever. That was the problem. I base this on 40 years of watching City.

In those dark days he was the only shining light. Pure genius

As posted on the blue view in the beg of Feb

On a recent flight to Zurich, the 28th of Jan after the Southampton game I meet Mr Corradi also travelling to Zurich. I initially thought he might be travelling to see another club to discuss terms and have a medical since but when asked he said no. I did however get to have a little chat with him and his English was excellent and he was a gent ,this is what he said.

I informed him that most fans were of the understanding that he hadn't quite settled in the UK and that it was only a matter of time before he returned to Italy for another club. I specifically mentioned that apparently a few smaller Italian clubs were supposed to be interested in him and was any of it true? He said he has had no contact with any Italian clubs and that he would not choose to leave City but he said the decision would lie in SP hands and that he didn't think SP was his biggest fan any more? He said if things didn't work out then he'd like to try another premiership club as he liked the place and wanted to give it a real go before going back to Italy.

I asked him about the signing of future strikers, he said we need to sign Superman which made me laugh. He went on to explain that when he signed SP had said we had excellent wingers and that he's get lots of crosses supplied. He said you need to be superman because you get the ball 50 yards from goal and have to beat 5 players before scoring! Though the supply chain has hardly been great he has had plenty of corners which are a little closer to goal! He went on to mention how he counts how many chances he has on goal during a match and how upset it makes him when he doesn't have any, he said that's happened a few times in a blue shirt! At the time he thought Mido would be signing and I explained I didn't think they were that different players and neither were going to score 20+ goals a season he just grunted.

On training … He thought training wasn't up to the standard on the continent and that he'd often train alone at Carrington on a Wednesday and that no one was around ??

After we left the plane and was heading for the terminal I received a text about SP and the under 21 job. I mentioned the fact that he might have a new manager because SP wanted to be under 21 coach and at the time City weren't having it … He said sarcastically that would be a shame 8) He went on to say that he thought that he wouldn't make a good manager for the under 21's as he wasn't that great with the kids and his coaching was more just defensive combative style. ….

I asked him about any rumours I should know and this one is more interesting … He said Micah is off to AC Milan in the summer?

Nice one Patrick - I think that underlines the fact that City have not exactly done all they can to get the best out of Corradi (& Samaras). Interesting what he says about Pearce as a manager - I would agree entirely

I wonder if Michael Johnson will get the chance to create the chances for Sturridge up front....sorry only dreaming...

a lot of spirit, but not good enough

It's good to hear that Corradi has refuted all the rubbish mentioned by the media this week.

Bluesology said...

It must all be true then ;-)

Corradi was a waste of money. I would of expected more goals from an ex italian striker. I hope he leaves this summer and we buy David Nugent
